ELA Courses
All students must recieve credit for a Regents exam which is given as part of their 11th grade in order to graduate.
Grade 9
English 9 (A&B)
Length of Course: 40 Weeks
Prerequisite: Successful completion of English 8

Description: This course is the first in a three-year program to prepare students to complete New York State's Comprehensive Examination in English successfully. Students will study, practice, and develop fundamental writing skills, including basic methods of library research. This course emphasizes sentence structure as well as standard American conventions of grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Students will be introduced to representational works of the major genres and methods for reading and responding critically. The goals of the B level course are identical to those of thes A level. The pace of this course is adjusted to meet the needs of students requiring additional reinforcement of basic skills. Major readings may include: Great Expectations, The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, Hoot, Animal Farm, War Comes to Willy Freeman, The Call of the Wild, The Miracle Worker, And Then There Were None, and I Am the Cheese.
English 9 (Honors)
Length of Course: 40 Weeks
Prerequisite: Students should have achieved a 90 in ELA 8 and be recommended by Middle School Counselor and/or ELA 8 teacher.

Description: This course is the first of a two-year preparation for enrollment in the English 11 and 12 grade Advanced Placement courses. Students will be introduced to a variety of research papers. Students will develop the critical skills necessary to interpret, evaluate, and respond to literature. Students will read and write extensively in response to a variety of literary genres. Major readings may include The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, Great Expectations, Animal Farm, The Stolen Years, The Call of the Wild, The Miracle Worker, The Power of One, Black Like Me, and Go Ask Alice.

Students will study and write nine rhetorical styles, including exemplification, description, narration, vision/classification, comparison/contrast, process analysis, cause/effect analysis, definition, and argument. Research and source-citation skills are integral to all writing tasks. Students will also read much of the English 11 fiction curriculum, including Lord of the Flies, The Scarlet Letter, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, The Great Gatsby, and Of Mice and Men.

world and learning how to respond to these works verbally, as well as through writing. Responses will be required on both a personal and critical level. Through their reading experience, students will be exposed to ideas about the living world. Through class discussion, students will begin to form their own ideas about themselves and their place in the world. Through their writing, students will practice expressing their views using both creative and expository styles.
