Franklin Academy Dress Code Guidelines
From the student handbook:
PROPER SCHOOL ATTIRE: This policy is in accordance with the NYS SAVE legislation.
Cleanliness and decency in clothing is required. In order to maintain an educational environment that promotes learning and prepares the student to enter college and the working world, it is necessary to establish a guideline for appropriate student attire. Student attire should not be offensive in a way that interferes with another student’s right or one’s own right to a safe comfortable school that promotes growth in self-esteem.
Clothing, attire, accessories and/or footwear which has or bears an expression or an insignia which is lewd, obscene, indecent or libelous (that is, contains objectionable language, including insult, whether directed at themselves or others), advocates racial or religious prejudice, or interferes with the learning process is prohibited. Also prohibited, is clothing and/or accessories that promote, or advocate the possession, use, or distribution of illegal drugs/ alcohol or drug/alcohol paraphernalia, and clothing and/or accessories which cause a substantial disruption or interferes with the learning process of the school.
Specifically a student’s dress, grooming and appearance, jewelry and nails, shall be safe, appropriate and not disrupt or interfere with the educational process.
For further clarification, the following guidelines are provided:
Extremely brief garments such as tube tops, half-shirts, halter tops, racer back tops, net tops, spaghetti straps , plunging necklines (front and/or back), openings or cut outs in the fabric that are revealing (cleavage should not be exposed) or make others uncomfortable. Items such as vests, shirts worn as partial cover-ups, or doubling up on spaghetti strap tanks, do not make wearing of these items appropriate. Use two fingers as a reference for strap width and bras must be covered.
All bottom garments must be no more than 5 inches above the knee which can be measured with a 3x5 card.
Pants must be held up high enough with a belt so that underwear are not exposed.
Students may not wear hats, or bandanas, etc. in the building. Hats should be worn as outerwear. Hats may be worn to and from locker before the school day begins and after the day has ended. They should be stored in a locker with backpacks and jackets. In addition, students should not wear heavy winter jackets in class or in the halls at any time.
Chains on wallets or clothes are not permitted.
The school administration may require a student to change his/her attire prior to returning to class should it be deemed inappropriate. If a student does not have a change of clothes and a parent is unable to bring clothing, alternate clothing will be offered to the student (and it needs to be returned prior to the end of the day). If the student refuses clothing, the student will report to ISD for the day and will be responsible for making up work. If a pattern of inappropriate clothing is established with a student, a parent meeting will be requested, and a corrective action plan will be created.
